Choosing Your Damajagua Tour

by | Sep 27, 2025 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

If there’s one “must-do” adventure in Puerto Plata, it’s conquering the 27 Charcos de Damajagua. This natural water park, carved by Mother Nature, is an exhilarating series of waterfalls, canyons, and azure pools that you can jump, slide, and swim through. It’s an unforgettable experience and one of our all-time favorite tours to guide.

But when you start looking into it, you’ll see a few options: 7, 12, or the full 27 waterfalls. So, which one is right for you?

As local guides who have navigated these falls hundreds of times, we’ve created this simple 2025 guide to help you choose the perfect Damajagua adventure for your group’s fitness level, time, and appetite for thrills.

The Three Levels of Adventure: A Breakdown

The tour is divided into three sections. You start by hiking up a lush jungle trail and then make your way back down through the river, tackling the waterfalls as you go.

1. The Short & Sweet Adventure: 7 Waterfalls

Best for: First-timers, families with children (8+), cruise passengers on a tight schedule, or those who want a taste of the action without a strenuous hike.

This is the most popular and accessible option. You’ll do a relatively short hike (about 25-30 minutes) to reach the 7th waterfall. From there, it’s all downhill! You’ll slide down natural water slides and take small, fun jumps into crystal-clear pools. It’s pure fun and captures the essence of the Damajagua experience in a manageable timeframe.

  • Fitness Level: Low to Moderate. You should be comfortable with a short uphill hike on an uneven trail.
  • Approximate Duration: Half-day trip (around 3-4 hours total, including transport).

2. The Fan Favorite: 12 Waterfalls

Best for: Most active travelers, couples, and groups of friends looking for a bigger challenge and more impressive waterfalls.

This option is the perfect middle ground and our personal recommendation for most visitors. It includes all the fun of the first seven falls, plus five more from the middle section of the canyon. The hike is a bit longer (around 45 minutes), but the reward is bigger jumps, longer slides, and more spectacular scenery. It requires a moderate level of fitness but delivers a huge sense of accomplishment.

  • Fitness Level: Moderate. You should be in good physical condition and prepared for a longer, steeper hike.
  • Approximate Duration: Half-day to three-quarters of a day trip (around 4-5 hours total).

3. The Ultimate Challenge: 27 Waterfalls

Best for: True adventure seekers, thrill-seekers, and those with a high level of physical fitness.

This is the full, unabridged Damajagua experience! You’ll embark on a challenging 70-minute hike all the way to the top. Your journey back down will take you through every single one of the 27 waterfalls. This is a serious physical challenge that requires endurance, but the bragging rights and the feeling of conquering the entire canyon are unmatched. It’s a full-day commitment to pure adrenaline.

  • Fitness Level: High. This is a strenuous hike and a long time in the water. Recommended only for those in excellent physical shape.
  • Approximate Duration: Full-day trip (around 6-7 hours total).

What to Wear & What to Bring

Proper preparation is key for a safe and fun day at the falls.

What to Wear:

  • Water Shoes (Non-negotiable!): You need shoes with a good grip that can get wet. No flip-flops or loose sandals are allowed.
  • Swimsuit: Wear it under your clothes to the park.
  • Comfortable Shorts/Leggings: Something you don’t mind getting wet and that allows for easy movement.

What to Bring:

  • A towel and a full change of dry clothes for after the tour.
  • A waterproof camera (like a GoPro) to capture the action.
  • Cash for tips for your excellent park guides or to purchase photos/souvenirs.
  • Most importantly: A sense of adventure!
